On my way!

Keep your eyes and ears open because if I'm not already where you are, I soon will be. We Myrtle Warblers (yes--I prefer to be referred to as that--how would YOU like your butt color to be an integral part of your name?) arrive on the scene as early as possible every spring. It's SO nice to hear birders exclaim, "Oh, look! A Yellow-rump!" or, much better if you ask me, "Oh, look! A beautiful Myrtle Warbler!" By May, when those stragglers with wimpy intestines who couldn't digest a wax myrtle berry if you paid them finally show up, suddenly we keep hearing, "Aw--it's just another yellow-rump." No wonder we like to arrive early.

Never have I seen one of your beautiful little "yellow rumps." Do you ever get down to Texas? We are most hospitable and would gladly treat you to a feast.

Some of us are down there right now. But we seldom visit feeders--our favorite food is insects. Sometimes you can hear us when we're up in the trees--we often make chip notes that sound like an annoyed math teacher going tsk.

"Butterbutts" are common enough in Texas in the winter, but are MUCH plainer looking - ID most often occurs when it flashes its yellow patch on the rump or under the wings.

I don't blame the poor little fella! Being refered to as "Butter Butt" all its life could cause a complex.

Excellent blog, I love it!
